Basics of Pistol Course

Course Overview

This course is designed for students of all experience levels, from first-time firearm owners to those seeking to reinforce safe fundamentals. Participants will develop the skills, knowledge, and discipline required for safe pistol handling and accurate shooting, with a strong emphasis on safety, responsibility, and confidence.

The course consists of an eight-hour block of instruction, including six hours of classroom instruction and two hours of live-fire training at an outdoor shooting range. By the end of the course, students will have a clear understanding of how pistols function, their major components, and how to safely handle, store, and maintain personal firearms.

Schedule & Environment

  • Instruction takes place rain or shine.

  • The range portion is conducted outdoors, and students should dress appropriately for weather conditions.

  • Range time may be rescheduled in the event of rain or snow; however, the classroom portion will proceed as scheduled.

  • In the event of severe thunderstorms, all training will be rescheduled.

  • Pistol knowledge and operation

  • Safe firearm handling and range safety

  • Ammunition types and selection

  • Fundamentals of pistol shooting

  • Common malfunctions and corrective actions

  • Safe firearm storage

  • Target scoring and evaluation

  • Selecting the right pistol

  • Basic pistol maintenance

  • Continued and advanced training opportunities through the NRA

Range Training / Course of Fire

Live-fire training consists of the following course of fire:

  • 20 rounds at 10 feet

  • 20 rounds at 15 feet

  • 20 rounds at 20 feet

  • 20 rounds at 45 feet on a 9-inch target

Students must qualify on the first target and pass the written test to receive a training certificate.

Required Student Equipment

Students should bring the following items:

  • A pistol that is comfortable for them to shoot

  • Factory-manufactured ammunition only (reloaded ammunition is not permitted for safety reasons)

  • Ear protection (electronic hearing protection recommended; in-ear protection is acceptable)

  • Eye protection rated Z87 OSHA compliant at a minimum

    • Prescription glasses may be used if they meet safety requirements

  • Snacks and drinks

    • Eating and drinking during the course is permitted and encouraged, as this is a full day of instruction

Additional Training Opportunities

  • Discounted or free courses are offered throughout the year for Military, Law Enforcement, Firefighters, and First Responders as a courtesy to those who have answered the call to serve.

  • Ladies-only courses are offered three times per year.

  • Private instruction and closed-group courses are available at special rates.
