This course provides the North Carolina Department of Public Safety (NCDPS)–required classroom instruction and handgun qualification necessary to apply for a North Carolina Concealed Carry Handgun (CCH) Permit.

Class is catered by a local eatery (included in price), menu options are sent two weeks prior to class to all prior registered students.

Purpose

The Prometheus 2A Defense North Carolina Concealed Carry Handgun (CHP) course is designed to provide lawful, safety-focused instruction that prepares students to responsibly carry a concealed handgun in compliance with North Carolina law. The course emphasizes safe handling, legal limitations, avoidance and de-escalation, and minimum proficiency standards required for permit application.

Objective:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

• Demonstrate safe firearm handling and storage practices

• Identify legal responsibilities and limitations of concealed carry in North Carolina

• Explain when deadly force may and may not be legally justified

• Recognize prohibited and restricted carry locations

• Interact appropriately with law enforcement

• Apply non-violent dispute resolution and de-escalation strategies

• Demonstrate minimum handgun proficiency during live-fire qualification

Prerequisite

Students without prior training are strongly encouraged to complete a Basic Pistol Course before enrolling.

  • Basic proficiency with a handgun is required

This course does not teach students how to shoot a handgun. The live-fire qualification is a state-mandated evaluation, not a fundamentals course. 

Students should have prior firearms training such as:

  • Military or law enforcement training

  • A certified firearms course (e.g., Basic Pistol)

  • Equivalent experience demonstrating safe handling and marksmanship

Class Structure & Duration

  • 8 hours of combined classroom instruction and handgun qualification testing

  • Range time varies based on class size and student proficiency

All instruction follows North Carolina statutory requirements.

Mandatory Range Equipment

Students must bring the following to qualify:

  • 100 rounds of factory-manufactured ammunition
    (Reloaded ammunition is not permitted for safety reasons.)

  • Handgun

    • Semi-automatic pistol or revolver

    • Any caliber

    • Unmodified and in good working condition

    • AR pistols are not permitted

    • Firearm must arrive unloaded and secured in a case or box

⚠️ Firearms and ammunition are not permitted in the classroom.
If you are unable to safely secure your firearm in your vehicle, please notify us in advance so proper arrangements can be made.

Required Personal Equipment

  • Ear protection

    • Electronic hearing protection recommended

    • In-ear protection acceptable

  • Eye protection

    • Must be ANSI Z87 rated or higher

    • Prescription glasses permitted if compliant

  • Baseball cap

  • Closed-toe footwear

    • No sandals, Crocs, or open-toe shoes

  • Snacks and drinks

    • Eating and drinking are permitted throughout the course

Range Qualification Test Requirements

  • 50 rounds total fired

  • B-27 target (45" x 24")

  • Minimum passing score: 175 out of 250 points (70%)

  • Shooting conducted from the ready position

3-Yard Line — 20 Rounds

  • 1 round in 2 seconds — 5 repetitions (5 rounds)

  • 2 rounds in 3 seconds — 5 repetitions (10 rounds)

  • 5 rounds in 10 seconds — 1 repetition (5 rounds)

5-Yard Line — 10 Rounds

  • 2 rounds in 3 seconds — 1 repetition

  • 3 rounds in 6 seconds — 1 repetition

  • 5 rounds in 10 seconds — 1 repetition

7-Yard Line — 10 Rounds

  • 5 rounds in 10 seconds — 1 repetition

  • 2 rounds in 4 seconds — 1 repetition

  • 3 rounds in 6 seconds — 1 repetition

15-Yard Line — 10 Rounds

  • 2 rounds in 6 seconds — 1 repetition

  • 3 rounds in 9 seconds — 1 repetition

  • 5 rounds in 15 seconds — 1 repetition

After Class

After successful completion, students must submit their Concealed Carry application through their county Sheriff’s Office, along with the instructor certification documents provided.
